She-Hulk (1x04): Wow, She Is Just Like Me

At first, she was like annoying… then she like grew on me… but then annoying again and then grew on me in like an annoying way.

NOTE: This story contains SPOILERS for Season 1, Episode 4 of She Hulk: Attorney at Law.

At the start of this week’s episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, we have a cold open that introduces us to Donnie Blaze, a magician who is a student of the mystic arts drop-out. He performs cheap magic in a hotel in LA and invites a woman on stage named Madisynn, with two N’s and one Y and it’s not where you thiiiink who he makes a part of his act. Unimpressed by his flower trick because they smell like nothing, Donnie sends her through a portal that leads to her traveling to the underworld. She makes a deal with a goat who then portals her to none other than our favorite Sorcerer Supreme, Wong.

After Madisynn spoils an episode of The Sopranos, Wong must take action. Wong gets in contact with his new lawyer, Jen Walters to try to prohibit Donnie Blaze from performing the mystic arts as a part of his gimmick. Meanwhile, Jen ventures out into the cesspool that is dating in her 30s. Rough. Episode four is my favorite episode so far and it is because of Madisynn and Wong’s odd couple dynamic.

Jen says in the episode that Wong is like a Twitter shield for at least a week. This is true but some of that credit has to be given to Madisynn King. I was pleasantly surprised when Madisynn grew on me. I was even more shocked when Twitter had nothing negative to say about She-Hulk this week.

How could you? It had the greatest duo in the MCU.

As the legendary sorcerer, Wong has proven he is a relatable guy. His go-to Karaoke song is “Hotel California”, he vibes to The Sopranos theme song, and even lays on his couch crying to episodes of This Is Us, again relatable.

If Madisynn had landed in some other uptight sorcerer’s pad I don’t think she would have been as warmly welcomed. Patty Guggenheim who plays the character of Madisynn truly was a stand-out in this week’s episode. This character addition was a breath of fresh air and fit so organically with the tone of She-Hulk.

The chemistry between her and Benedict Wong was magical itself. Both actors were having fun playing off each other and it shows. This especially shows with the end credits scene between the two.

It was just a girl from Florida who loves a cocktail and her sorcerer supreme, “Wongers” sharing popcorn and crying to This is Us. I hope we get to see them find their endless gin and tonics and maybe sing some karaoke.

MCU please give me that.

Madisynn might be my go-to costume this Halloween because I too have a purple snuggie like her.
